Historically, the most common use for stamps in henna has been in mass festival situations, where a crowd of hundreds or more would be stamped with a very simple pattern..... a little feet of the goddess stamp, or conch. In that situation, elegant pattern was not particularly important, but making sure everyone could take part in the celebration quickly was crucial. There, stamps were a good idea and worked really well. The stamps I've seen that were used with henna were much more deeply cut than a lino block. (Actually, they looked a little like tiny branding irons.) Henna paste is pretty goopy, and that goes against getting a decent impression off a printing plate. If you're really having a rotten time lining things up .... go for harmless crayola fibertip kiddie markers to get things lined up before you start ..... or use one of the micro pens to sketch, then wipe it off with alcahol before you henna. There will be traces left of the sketch, and you can line up with that. There's also a pencil called "Stabilo" by Pelican ( 75 cents) that is a very soft graphite, that if you moisten the skin slightly, you can draw on it easily, it wipes away easily, and doesn't interfere with the henna. I'm not convinced that templates are the answer to much anything, becuause there is SOOOO much variation in people's bodies, and you're always having to compensate for curves, slopes, wrinkly bits..... Other than that .... practice! It really does get better! Eventually you'll find tools, techniques and materials that really suit you .... and if you try EVERYTHING once, when new situations come up, you may find a perfect use for something that didn't work right before!
