Henna won't dye my hair!

Does anyone know about how to make a henna paste that can dye hair? I
have dark brown hair, and I've seen people with very dark hair who
have died their hair red using henna.

I tried to use the regular paste that you can use on your hands, but
that didn't work. Actually, that paste didn't really dye my hands
either. . .

So now my second question is:

does anyone know how to get the maximum dye out of old henna?

I'll be very grateful to anyone who can help.
